Here are some different strategies that will really help to succeed in nursing school.
#1- Give A lot of Time & Focus
One of the main reasons why main people struggle with nursing school is honestly because of how much information there is is to learn. It can feel very overwhelming, very quickly.
One of the first things I will tell you is that you have to really prioritize the time you put in towards your education more than what other students in other majors do.
So your friend with a major in Child and Family Development may be able to study all week and then relax on the weekend, however you may not be able to do that.
You will still likely have to put some time towards studying on the weekend. So if the pandemic didn’t take away most of your social life, you can count on nursing school to remove the rest lol.
#2- Prioritize As Much Visual Learning As Possible
If you’re like most people, visual learning is by far one of the best tools towards content retention and understanding. And there’s so many ways to incorporate visual learning, whether it is through video, books, or flashcards. I recommend doing all three. You want to take advantage as much as you can of visual learning aides that will accelerate how quickly you grasp the information.
Time is so important in nursing school. So the faster that you can learn something the better. I know for me when I was in nursing school I struggled with medical surgical nursing the most. And this was the area that most people shared with me that they struggle with ALOT in nursing school.
Here’s a quick video that breaks down one method to really grasping medical surgical nursing through more visual aide teaching.

#3- Take Advantage of the Right Books
Notice how I said the RIGHT books. Utilizing the right books will make all the difference in nursing school. I remember when I was in my second semester of nursing school and after weeks of studying harder, writing more care plans and showing up earlier to clinicals, I still ended up with a big fat F and I had retake medical surgical nursing class. However one the things that made a HUGE difference in my success after retaking med surg was accessing the right books that made the information SO much easier for me.
Here’s some of the books I highly recommend below.
Prentice-Hall Nursing Reviews & Rationales: Medical-Surgical Nursing, 2nd Edition
Medical-Surgical Nursing Made Incredibly Easy (Incredibly Easy Series)
4 Weeks to NCLEX® Workbook & Study Planner: Nursing Mnemonic Visual Learning Resource by Picmonic
These are three different things that will help you to succeed in nursing school if you sincerely apply them diligently to your nursing school journey.
